The Aloes Farm boasts two stunning and fully equipped self-catering houses,

conveniently close to Hilton Village, Hilton College and the famous KZN Midlands Meander.

The Aloes Farm

The Aloes Farm is an active 10 ha small-holding, bordering the Hilton College estate. This stunning property provides a unique combination of rural living just five km from the N3 highway. Sitting astride the main dolerite ridge that extends from Hilton, the farm has spectacular panoramic views to the east that overlook Albert Falls Dam and Wartburg, and to the west towards the Nhlozane Peak and the Drakensberg where The Giant can be seen silhouetted against the sunset on clear evenings. All these natural features contribute to an amazing sense of space and peace, and guests are welcome to walk through farmlands and natural veld, to savour the quiet and peace of the area, enjoying the evening call of jackal, the burble of fiery-necked nightjars or the sharp whistles of reedbuck.

Despite having a rural atmosphere, The Aloes Farm is conveniently close to Hilton Village and the N3 highway. One of the features that make one feel you truly are ‘getting away’ when you stay at The Aloes Farm, is the fact that the last 2 km you travel on before arriving at the cottage is dirt road. We love that we live in the country and yet are 5 km away from the Hilton Life Hospital or the variety of shops in the village!

The D494 district has a remarkedly low incidence of crime and local residents will attest to the general sense of safety and security that we enjoy, which means that guests can relax with a peace of mind.

5/5
What an amazing and peaceful getaway! I recently spent a few nights at the studio and all I can say is WOW! From the comfy linen, fully stocked kitchen to the gorgeous patio and beautifully decorated walls, the studio really is a luxury home away from home. And it’s pet-friendly too! I had such an amazing time there. And the host Shelagh is as beautiful on the inside as she is out. Couldn’t have picked a better spot for a relaxing getaway from the city. Definitely going back ❤️

Your Hosts

Richard and Shelagh Lechmere-Oertel and their four children have lived on The Aloes Farm since 2013, where they have embraced sustainability principles by using solar power, borehole water, wetland filtration systems, and developing large veggie gardens in an effort to live more in equilibrium with the diverse flora and fauna of the area. Richard has worked from home as a consulting grassland ecologist and Shelagh has home-schooled children. With two children now at university, there has been more time available to develop the tourism potential of The Aloes Farm

Pet-Friendly

The Aloes Farm is a pet-friendly space, and guests are welcome to bring their pets with them. Both the guest houses are enclosed with electric fencing that will contain all but the smallest and most determined escapee, and there is ample space in the gardens and the fields beyond for pets to exercise and play.

Art @ the Aloes

One of the unique features of THE STUDIO and THE GALLERY is that all the art works are originals painted by your host, Shelagh. Shelagh started painting in 2008, and despite no formal tuition, has painted prolifically since then. As a Christian, Shelagh is a great believer in art speaking a visual prophetic message, and she has travelled extensively in Southern Africa and Europe, painting publically in many different contexts. The basis for her inspiration is her Christian faith and the belief that God uses her painting to encourage people with ‘Words of Art’ (as opposed to them just being ‘works of art’). All paintings are available for purchase, so the next time you visit there will probably new art on the walls!

Things to do in the area:

The Hilton area is very well endowed with good schools, many of which offer boarding facilities, and The Aloes Farm is conveniently located immediately adjacent to the Hilton College estate and within 10 km of St Anne’s, Laddsworth and Cowan House schools. Slightly further afield are the internationally-renowned MTB trails of the Karkloof (approx. 30 min drive) and the downhill MTB trails of Cascades (approx. 20 min drive).
